Twelve

We exited the harbor to the east this time, rounding Rose Island before turning north. The open sea was in a confused state. The winds had picked up out of the north. That was common during the winter months, but it didn’t make the ride any more comfortable. We did not make good time. The skiff was constantly threatening to capsize. Marie spent most of her time sitting backward to keep an eye on it. Its flat bottom was not ideal for the ocean. We should have left it behind, but it would have been one more thing to worry about. Small boats and motors are under constant threat of being stolen in all of the islands.

We had no choice but to keep our speed down and plunge ahead. The return trip took twice as long and we were absolutely worn out by the time we got the anchor down in Marsh Harbour. Marie started dinner while I brought the skiff alongside and tied it off. I could see no activity at the marina, but it was late. Everything else looked the same. We’d find out if anything had happened while we were gone the next day.

Marie was anxious to take new clothes to the women. I figured the men would be happy with the grill we’d bought. We could all eat in better style at the end of the day. We could wash up from our rain collector. We could wash the dishes too. Things were improving little by little. I stayed awake long enough to eat some dinner and slug down some rum.

I woke up groggy and cranky in the morning, but that quickly changed when I saw Marie cooking bacon in her undies and a tank top. She gave me a big smile and a bigger “good morning.” It completely changed my attitude, just like that. I gave her a quick hug and thanked her for being with me.

“It’s a big day,” she said. “We get to show our gratitude in a tangible way.”

“I love your positivity,” I said. “It’s infectious.”

“Maybe I can infect the wives today,” she said. “It would be nice to hold evening dinner parties with all of us in attendance.”

“Dinner parties?” I asked. “That sounds incongruous to our situation here.”

“Big word for a boat bum,” she said. “Our situation will be what we make of it. Our little project, our team, we’ll be the envy of the island.”

My first thought was the more we had the more we’d become targets, but I kept my thoughts to myself. I didn’t want to ruin Marie’s happy mood. Keeping her happy was important to me. Without her, this whole enterprise would be miserable. Without her, I’d be alone again. I wanted to hold onto her forever.

“Keep steering me in the right direction,” I said. “We’ll rebuild paradise together.”

“That’s the spirit.”

We took the grill and clothes with us on our first run to shore. There was no sign of our crew. I wheeled the grill inside and we walked to their house with the bags of clothes.
